Living My Best* Life
*Authentic. None of that “Think Positive” BS
A collection of thoughts, stories, and poems from my own self-discovery journey.
Wildfires and Keto Diets
2018 saw the most devastating and damaging California wildfires in history. It was crazy, and grimly ironic, that both the poor and the rich were left fleeing their homes as “Paradise” was hit.
The Best Year of My Life—But I Can’t Say One Good Thing That Happened
I heard someone say something earlier tonight that stuck with me.
8 Years Clean- The Hibernating Beast
I’m celebrating 8 years of recovery today. Eight years since I hit the reset button on the trajectory of my life. And I couldn’t be more grateful. For several reasons.
Perhaps the most important reason being that not only am I alive today, but I also want to be
Thank You From A Falling Bomb
It’s a letter from the falling bomb that destroyed a boy’s family home, forcing his family into a life as refugees in Syria. It’s really beautiful and I definitely suggest you give it a read.
How Accepting Myself Helps Me Accept Others
When I can come to full terms with my own humanity—that I’m imperfect and just doing the best I can with what I’ve got—I can also extend that to others and accept their humanity. And with that, accept that sometimes, they may even cause me pain.
If You're Still Breathing, You're the Lucky One
This is just a beautiful song. It speaks to me in that, whether you're just getting by, whether you're hurting, or even if you're having the time of your life, you're lucky just to be.
The Holiday Before the Holiday
There are ceremonial gatherings where we all get together and acknowledge how tight-knitted we are and how alike we think.
Those gatherings tend to be at the supermarket on the day before Christmas Eve.
How Streaming is Redefining “Wasted Time"
My brother is a big gamer dude. He’s always liked video games, and these days he’s pretty serious about it. He streams online and has a community of other gamers that he streams with for up to 50 hours/week. My natural response is one that minimizes the meaning of the whole thing and tends to judge it as wasted time. But tonight I popped in on his page and saw that he was streaming live, so I poked around and listened for a bit.
How We’re All Just Trying To Make It
A homeless guy approached me recently to ask for some money:“Do you have any change, miss? I’m just trying to make it.”
Man. We’re not that different, are we? I’m just trying to make it too.
A Lesson From Luca
Luca is my dog. I think she’s here to teach me about love. She definitely sees in me something I don’t see in myself, and I know that because she loves me more than is even comfortable for me to fully take in.
What it Means to Be Good Enough
Have you ever been talking to a friend about something you read or someone you heard about, but you can’t remember the person’s name? You have enough of a vague idea of how it sounded, and you might mumble through two or three variations before the other person gets what you were trying to say, and fills in the blank with the name, leading to a sigh of relief on your part!
Jackpots and Time Bombs
If you go into a casino and you’re expecting to hit a jackpot, you’re likely going to be very disappointed.
Why You Can’t Outsmart Your Gut
But the reality is, this has been an itch that won’t go away. And I know better than to try to outsmart my gut. It always comes back to get you in one way or another. Or, maybe not so much to get you, but more like a persistent child who simply will not stop tugging on your jacket until you acknowledge her.
Being Sure of Nothing
Maybe the key is to go through as much of life as possible, with your mind already made up about as little as possible.
That Time I Cried at a Random Stranger’s Funeral
I've always said that I wanted to plan my funeral, and I don't mean it to sound grim, but it's kind of exciting. So I went to a random stranger’s funeral instead.
Am I a Sell-out?
I work 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. It's pretty much exactly the type of job I always said I didn't want to end up in: in an office staring at a computer for the whole day.
