Thoughts On Chuck Lorre’s Vanity Card #378

CHUCK LORRE PRODUCTIONS, #378

I do not interact with Facebook, Twitter or any of the other social networking platforms. My reasoning is simple. Why in the world would I want to share my private thoughts and feelings with the world at large? What good could possibly come from me having a convenient outlet to express myself to millions of people? The more likely outcome is that in a misguided attempt to be funny or cute, I'd say something stupid and wind up getting publicly raked over the proverbial coals. Which is why I think the wiser path is to keep my opinions to myself. For example, if I were to feel moral outrage over an organization riddled with pedophiles expressing their moral outrage over contraception, I certainly wouldn't tweet about it. And the photographs I've taken of myself wearing nothing but oven mitts and a tiara will never be shared on a Facebook page.

Wow, this is almost 7 years later and it feels like this could have been written today, or this week. There’s still people losing their jobs, livelihoods, and reputations over stupid things they’re saying online, the church is still mostly anti-birth control, and there’s even more sexual abuse coming out of the Vatican.

I like the humor Chuck offers, and that the EXACT reason most people would offer for why they do social media or why social networking is positive, is the same reason it’s a shit idea.

I identify with the thought or anxiety of having my thoughts or poorly worded jokes come off completely as unintended.

Recently I went public (well, to my network) of my political views, since it seems these days so much can be deciphered about a person by a single opinion or political leaning. I am unequivocally, undeniably, and unchangedly pro-Oxford comma. What does that say about me? I’d be curious to hear the crazy conspiracies that I’m sure could arise from both sides of the aisle.

The reality is, how many people make up each of their opinions for themselves? Or how many figure out a few things that are important to them or the people around them, see which party favors some of those views, and then blankets themselves to that party’s way of thinking about everything else, too?

I’d rather have my own beliefs than those of a set, defined party. But that’s just me.
